On the 5th of November BUILD UP  will host a webinar with the  TIMEPAC Project on ‘Advancing Energy Performance Certification: Integrating Data, Smart Readiness, and Renovation Strategies’.

TIMEPAC has developed future scenarios to enhance current building certification, shifting from a static assessment of individual buildings to a continuous and comprehensive evaluation considering each building as part of the broader built environment and its use over time. The experience gained from implementing these scenarios has been shared with professionals, researchers, and other stakeholders involved in building energy certification through webinars and in-class training held within the TIMEPAC Academy. In this webinar, we will address some of the key issues of the future transformation of current EPCs along the lines proposed in the latest EPBD which were addressed within the TIMEPAC project.

Enhancing the EPC through operational data

Integrating operational data into EPC schemas would improve the accuracy and reliability of Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs). This operational data includes energy monitoring, indoor environmental quality (IEQ), economics, sustainability, and more. Calibrating energy models helps minimize the performance gap between a building’s actual energy consumption and the energy performance reported in the EPC. The enhanced EPC, as conceived by TIMEPAC, also incorporates additional assessment methods and indicators from various areas. These include measures of indoor environmental quality, the impact of Building Automation and Control Systems (BACS), and the cost-effectiveness of energy-saving measures.  This comprehensive approach ensures a more accurate and holistic evaluation of a building’s energy performance over time.

Evaluating smart readiness and energy flexibility in buildings

Effective strategies for sustainable and climate-friendly urban development must be adaptive and grounded in empirical data. Integrating the Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI) into a building’s energy performance assessment holds significant potential to facilitate sustainable change in current development practices and to transform existing building stock into major energy-generating entities. TIMEPAC delved into practical elements of SRI auditing, focusing on identifying energy efficiency and flexibility in buildings. As a result of this work, we have developed the TIMEPAC Code of Conduct for Smart Readiness and Sustainability Rating.  

Improving data quality of EPC databases through BIM

To assess whether current EPC databases are prepared for the EPBD recast, we conducted an EPC database audit using 19 metrics among the TIMEPAC partners. The audit revealed a significant absence of links between EPCs and BIM, highlighting major challenges in data integration. While using BIM for EPC generation can improve the quality of certificates, it faces obstacles, particularly with interoperability between modelling and simulation tools. In TIMEPAC we developed guidelines for generating EPCs from digital models using existing technologies, contributing to the development of standardized and reliable protocols for the EU.

Effective and efficient renovation passports for the transformation of the building stock  

The renovation passport is a key component of the EPBD recast, aimed at steering the building stock toward zero emissions. When implementing the renovation passport, it is essential to balance conflicting goals such as accuracy, effectiveness, cost, and affordability to create an effective and efficient tool for building renovation. Addressing data availability and quality—an issue we tackled in TIMEPAC— is central to this purpose. Based on our work in TIMEPAC, we have developed a guideline to support the planning and implementation of the renovation passport.
