The EU funded project TIMEPAC is inviting building experts across Europe to participate in its new platform: the TIMEPAC Academy – a place for professionals in the building sector to learn about the next generation of certification methods, tools and training needed to support the renovation of Europe’s building stock.
To encourage building experts to adopt more holistic methods of building assessment and certification, as envisaged in the upcoming EU’s Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), TIMEPAC is launching the TIMEPAC Academy, a free learning platform that is committed to offering comprehensive education, training, and resources tailored for professionals engaged in the building energy sector. The platform aims to equip individuals with the necessary knowledge and skills to excel in evaluating and certifying building energy performance.
The TIMEPAC Academy will release its first series of six training webinars which will start on the 29th of February and end on the 22nd of March 2024. The webinars are aimed at but not limited to: certifiers, energy auditors, architects, engineers, energy managers and facility managers, energy agencies, and local public authorities; who are keen to stay updated about the latest developments in the EPBD and enhance their understanding of energy-saving techniques, smart readiness, sustainability principles, and regulatory requirements related to building assessment and certification.
The topics and dates for the first six webinars are as follows:
- EPC data collection, validation and exploitation – Thursday, 29 February 2024, 10:00 – 12:00 CET. Explore the synergies between energy performance certification, technical system inspections, and energy auditing. Our objective is to streamline the process of generating EPCs by identifying essential elements for efficient data extraction from various sources, ensuring their accuracy and reliability.
- Advanced methods and tools for holistic energy renovation of buildings – Tuesday, 5 March 2024, 10:00 – 12:00 CET. Gain insights into using BIM models to generate EPCs for both new buildings and successive renovation stages throughout their lifespan. Practical cases will demonstrate the capabilities of available technologies.
- Analysis and visualisation of EPC data and development of innovative energy services – Tuesday, 12 March 2024, 10:00 – 12:00 CET. Understand how to harness EPC data for the preparation of deep energy renovation projects, and gain insights into monitoring and verifying energy savings, including the potential role of EPCs in this process.
- Combining EPC databases with other sources for holistic assessment of the building stock – Thursday, 14 March 2024, 10:00 – 12:00 CET. Using open data from EPCs in Catalonia as an example, we show how the integration of EPC databases with other sources allows for a comprehensive analysis of the built environment, including population statistics, renewable energy production, and public amenities.
- Exploitation of EPC for local, regional and national energy planning – Wednesday, 20 March 2024 10:00 – 12:00 CET. Explore the potential to use EPC databases to develop an archetype-based urban building energy model, as devised in the TIMEPAC project. The webinar offers comprehensive training in statistical analysis of the EPC database, with the goal of leveraging it for benchmarking initiatives.
- Operational optimisation of building energy performance based on activities during EPC generation – Friday, 22 March 2024, 10:00 – 12:00 CET. Find out how to combine the on-site visits with re-commissioning activities. Gain the necessary knowledge and skills to provide cost effective optimization advice based on activities during EPC generation.

Background
Europe’s building stock covers some 25 billion square meters of floor space, of which 75% is residential. Therefore, retrofitting plays a major role in achieving the climate targets set for 2050. The EU Green Deal and its Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) are crucial for tackling climate change and energy poverty by spurring a wave of building renovations.
TIMEPAC’s vision is fully aligned with the approach to Energy Performance Certification introduced in the latest revision of the EPBD. The EU funded project’s focus has been on enhancing energy certification processes, shifting from a single, static certification model to more comprehensive approaches that consider a wide-ranging management of data generated throughout the energy performance certification process and treating buildings as dynamic and integral components of a broader built environment.
